This weekend, April 20-21, weâre hosting an Editorsâ Lab hack event at the Times building. The worldwide Editorsâ Labs series, organized by the Global Editors Network (GEN), invites teams to build apps and projects around a media-related theme. This weekendâs theme is ânewsgamingâ: projects at the intersection of games and journalism.
The main objective of the Editorsâ Lab is to produce new and open journalistic tools, and to promote a culture of innovation within newsrooms. The future of quality journalism lies in constant innovation. Global Editors Network
Each team will consist of one journalist, one designer and one developer. Teams include staffers from the Associated Press, the Boston Globe and other major media organizations.
Judges from The New York Times, the Online News Association, the Knight Foundation and the Global Editors Network will review the teamsâ projects and choose one winner. The grand prize is $6,500 â" plus the chance to compete against nine other winning teams at the GEN News Hackathon in Paris. At the Editorsâ Lab in Buenos Aires last September, the winning team created visualizations of auto theft statistics using data from several sources, including the public.
Weâll post some highlights next week, and you can follow @editorsnet for updates during the event.
